Viticulture
In 2002 the number of wine companies was estimated at just under 400. At last count in 2011 the number number of wineries (including virtual wineries) was estimated to have increased by over 78% to some 700. Over the same period the area of land in grape production has increased by an estimated 144% – with estimated tonnes crushed increasing by over 173%. Probably the most dramatic trend between 2002 and 2011 is the huge growth in wine exports – which have increased over 572% by volume and 344% by value during the period. Total annual wine export value is now just under $1.1 billion – making it New Zealand’s 9th most important export trade.
